Devon’s All Day Breakfast, raising funds for the BBC Radio Devon Air Ambulance Appeal

Devon’s All Day Breakfast, raising funds for the BBC Radio Devon Air Ambulance Appeal
Friday 1st April 2011

As it’s our birthday today, we decided to do something to take part in a local event too!!

Cafe Alf Resco are taking part in Devon’s All Day Breakfast, raising funds for the BBC Radio Devon Air Ambulance Appeal. This appeal is raising funds in order to facilitate the order of a second owned Devon Air Ambulance. This is something we are really happy to support, we know what a big difference the Air Ambulance can make, especially as one of our Crew had a family member airlifted by the Air Ambulance recently.

So, because we serve our great breakfasts all day already (!), we’ve decided we’re going to give a donation to the appeal. Plus if you buy a piece of our delicious 17th Birthday cake, we’ll donate the money from that too, plus all our tips on the day, and we've got a collection box for all your loose changes as well!!!!

What better excuse to come & enjoy our Birthday Breakfast celebrations while donating to a great local charity at the same time?!
P.S. Listen to BBC Radio Devon on the day, they will be visiting the venues supporting the appeal.

Respect the Aged Day - Complimentary Breakfast for all Octogenarians!

Respect the Aged Day - Complimentary Breakfast for all Octogenarians!
Monday 4th April 2011

Respect the Aged Day
Monday 4th April 2011 - All Day

On Monday 4th April Alf’s will be supporting the first Respect the Aged Day when we will offer Octogenarians a free breakfast at Alf’s. There will be a specially-commissioned poem reading marking the day by local poet Kevin Pyne at 11.30am.

Mike Cast is co-author of the book ‘8000 Years of Wisdom’ which celebrates wise words from 100 80 year olds. The book is a living history seen through the eyes of those who have lived through fascinating social and historical events over the last 80 years.

The book reflects dramatic world changes as experienced by people from all walks of life. Some stories cover major events, such as the two world wars and the 1948 London Olympics, significant social developments, such as the advent of widespread car ownership and commercial air flights, opening up travel to the everyday person. On a more domestic level, memories include simple home remedies in widespread use before the arrival of the NHS, such as onion gruel, bread poultices, mustard baths, goose fat and brimstone and treacle.

The idea came from a conversation Mike had with his elderly parents on how they could share their life’s experiences with their grandchildren. Mike is a champion of the older generation and has mounted a campaign calling on the Prime Minister to get the UK to follow Japan’s lead by adopting a “respect for the Aged Day.”

Local MP Sarah Wollaston is also supporting the day “I am delighted to support the first ‘Respect the Aged Day’ and to add my thanks to all those who are contributing to this event. In Torbay we are fortunate to have such a wealth of experience and the voluntary sector could not manage without the dedicated service that older residents give to our communities”.

Mike is hoping to make this an annual event, so come & support the very first one!
