Ten Tors Challenge, Dartmoor

Ten Tors Challenge, Dartmoor
Friday 13th May 2011 to Sunday 15th May 2011

Ten Tors Challenge, Dartmoor

This is the 51st year of the unique moorland expedition which is organised by the army. Nearly 2,500 youngsters from across the South West take part in a two-day hike of up to 55 miles (88.5km) across Dartmoor. Teams are aged from 14 to 20-year-olds carrying all their kit, tents, cooking supplies and use their survival and navigational skills to complete the course.

This year marks the startof a unique Ten Tors partnership between Devon Youth Services in Dartmouth and the TS Dartmouth Sea Cadet Corps. It's the first time the Army, the organisers of the event, has allocated three teams to Dartmouth - two teams of 6 tackling the 35-mile challenge & one team of older walkers tackling the 45-mile challenge.

Teams set off from Okehampton base camp at 7am on Saturday morning and must stop for the evening at 8pm. They can start again at 6am on Sunday and have to reach the finish line by 5pm on Sunday in order to complete the course. Teams can choose to climb 10 of 19 manned tors, where there are checkpoints.

On many occasions, the weather - as well as the moor itself - has proved the biggest obstacle. If it's not too wet, it's too cold. And every now and then, heat can also be a problem.

Here at Alf's we are big supporters of Dartmouth's young people & think the Ten Tors event is an event worth backing....We have provided tshirts, jumpers & flags this year, so when they bound across the finish line (or hobble!) no-one will be in any doubt where these brilliant youngsters are from - Dartmouth!! The teams were treated to a special team breakfast before they left for the challenge - an army marches on it's stomach you know!

Plus the great Adam who works with us is taking part for the second time.....and we love him!

We also love the soon-to-depart-to-the-other-side-of-the-world Chris Long who has organised the teams, he's great!!
