Alf's Afternoon Tea for Dartmouth Hospital League of Friends

Alf's Afternoon Tea for Dartmouth Hospital League of Friends
Thursday 26th July 2012

On Thursday 26th July, from 3pm to 6pm, Cafe Alf Resco will be holding a fabulous Afternoon Tea Party to raise funds for the Dartmouth Hospital League of Friends.

Pop along and get your sweet treat fix with our array of homemade cakes, biscuits & Devon Cream Teas....all money raised will go towards the Dartmouth Hospital League of Friends & their essential work in keeping Dartmouth Hospital running smoothly.

If you would like to bake a cake for us to sell to help raise funds, please drop it into the cafe on the morning of Thursday 26th...thankyou!

The League of Friends was founded in 1956 and since then has been very active in providing many extras for the Hospital.
Initially the League of Friends provided comforts & amenities for patients, with the escalating costs of medical equipment the League moved to provide or help purchase some more major items such as special beds, hoists, resuscitation and physiotherapy equipment.

The League of Friends is a Registered Charity with the welfare of patients as its prime - indeed its sole - concern. It acts as a very effective and tangible link between the Community and the hospital. Through its elected, voluntary committee the League considers requests from the Departments of the hospital for equipment & other items and spreads its charitable wings into helping the Occupational Therapists with equipment for rehabilitating patients back into the community and also items for the Community Nurses and Midwives.

Recently it has been possible to update the X-Ray with a more capable and safer machine and to provide a small suite of rooms - 'The Friends' Suite' - to act as a 'half-way house' for rehabilitating patients and also as accommodation for relatives wishing to spend precious time with their loved ones in hospital but unable to find accommodation in the Town.

There remains much to be done and for those of us that live in the area it is so important to keep our hospital running and up to date. Through the media we are only too familiar with the fate of some Community Hospitals in other parts of the West Country.
You can join the Dartmouth Hospital League of Friends, just leave your name and telephone number or address at the Hospital Reception or even at the Dartmouth Surgery Reception and one of the Committee will get back to you. The annual subscription can be as little as £1.

South Devon Crab Festival
Monday 30th July 2012 to Sunday 5th August 2012

South Devon Crab Festival
30th July - 5th August

Where else but in South Devon would you find a week-long festival dedicated to crabs and all things crabby? The South Devon Crab Festival is held all over South Devon at various locations and includes events, tasting, demonstrations, crabbing competitions and a range of beach events to enjoy.

Celebrating a West Country industry - There are many distinct events in South Devon that reflect its diverse and colourful identity, and of these the South Devon Crab Festival celebrates a traditional West Country industry with all the gusto and passion that we like to throw into all our festivities. From teaching people how to crab to tasting the excellent range of dishes involving crab, we love to celebrate our maritime bounty in style. The South Devon Crab Festival is putting this crustacean back on the culinary map.

Dartmouth is the perfect place to try your hand at crabbing - all you need is a bucket, a line and some bait!
