The Taming of the Shrew - Dartmouth Shakespeare Week at Dartmouth Castle 2014
Tuesday 5th August 2014 to Saturday 9th August 2014

The Taming of the Shrew - Dartmouth Shakespeare Week at Dartmouth Castle 2014
5th - 9th August

Never ones to rest on our laurels, we are revisiting our second ever production in 2014...only this time, with a difference.

This year we hope to be affiliated, once again, to the Royal Shakespeare Company and their Open Stages initiative 2014-16 and it is with this in mind (and because we love setting ourselves a challenge or three!) that our Artistic Director - and 2014's production director - Jane Windosr-Smith, has elected to present this audience favourite in the style of the Italian Commedia dell'arte.

All the characters from dell'arte will be there, represented by Shakespeare's own well-loved characters: Arlechinno, Columbina, The Innamorati (Lovers) and Pantalone to name but a few.

The comedy and downright slapstick (a word derived from dell'arte performances) of Shrew lends itself magnificently to this form and we intend to mix the wehole thing up and present what amounts to a Shakespearean pantomime in August!

This is an entirely new and incredibly exciting direction for the company to take, and one not without its own challenges. But we are already looking forward to starting work on this production - editing and planning are, even now, in progress - with specialist workshops in the dell'arte form and a completely new way of rehearsing...for us, at least.

So make a note in your diaries and be sure to join us for what promises to be an unique and thoroughly entertaining production of one of Shakespeare's best-loved and most comedic plays: Taming of the Shrew.

Tickets for the performance are available now from Dartmouth Tourist Information Centre 01803 834224

Totnes Good Food Market

The Totnes Good Food Market is held on the 3rd Sunday of each month from 10am to 3pm. Now in it’s second year, the market is the biggest monthly producers & farmers market in the Westcountry.

Regularly attracting over 50 traders each month, the Totnes Good Food Sunday market has become the biggest fine food and drink market in Devon and is rapidly becoming the largest in the South West.

GOLD AWARD FOR TOTNES SUNDAY FOOD MARKET - The Totnes Good Food Sunday Market, which captures that elusive “Totnesian vibe”, has just struck gold winning the Taste of the West Hospitality and Retail Gold Award 2014 for best food market in Devon.

Launched in June 2010 with just over twenty producers, the market has grown month by month both in reputation and popularity. It attracts food lovers from all over the region, with three-quarters of its traders coming from within a 30 mile radius of Totnes. The market has also been award-nominated and warranted mentions in local and national newspapers and magazines.

We are delighted to inform the many supporters of water sports that for the fourth year Doug Litt, a well known Devon Water Polo Coach and Match Organiser has offered to return to the boatfloat. Doug is so chuffed with the crowd participation and support that water polo gets at the Regatta that there was no question that he would again organise a few matches and a coaching session at this year's event. Sign Up and Join the Competition - If there is anyone out there, man, woman, boy or girl, who would like to take part this year please make yourself known to the organisers on the day. Public Give it a Go Session - There is a Public "come and have a go" session which is open to anyone who is comfortable in the water. Wetsuits allowed!

Band Concert

LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS - 7.00pm - 9.00pm. Bandstand, Royal Avenue Gardens - The unofficial start to Dartmouth Regatta, the much loved Last Night of the Proms at the Bandstand is back once more to give a rousing and patriotic opening to the forthcoming event. Performing once again, after such an impressive inaugural performance last year, will be Sophie Marie King. A classical soprano, who oozes pure class, Sophie is perfect for the Regatta Proms as she has performed at many events held by the Royal British Legion, singing twice at the Colston Hall, Bristol accompanied by the Band of the Army Air Corps. She also performed at the Festival of Remembrance in Swindon and the In Memory of the Fallen concert in her home town of Plymouth. Providing the music again this year is Spectrum Music. They worked so well with Sophie last year that it seemed sensible to bring them both back! This very popular Band was formed in 1997 and got its name from the fact that it caters for a range of musical taste and has members from diverse backgrounds. The Band regularly plays in various parts of the Country as well as Brugge and Boulogne. Regular attendees will know to bring their own Union Jacks, but anyone who forgets can usually purchase one from the Information Hut.

Dartmouth Sailing Week 2014

Dartmouth Sailing Week 2014
Saturday 23rd August 2014 to Sunday 31st August 2014

Dartmouth Sailing Week 2014
23rd - 31st August, 2014

If you only race in ONE regatta this year, why not make it DARTMOUTH WEEK 2014, part of The 170th Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta?

From classic yachts, to hi-tech sports boats and dashing dinghies, Dartmouth Week 2014 guarantees some of the most thrilling and competitive sailing along Britain’s south coast - all against the dramatic back drop of Start Bay and the beautiful River Dart.
Whether you're an 'old hand' or thinking of coming to Dartmouth for the first time, you'll be given a very warm welcome at our three hosting clubs: Dartmouth Yacht Club, Dittisham Sailing Club and Royal Dart Yacht Club.

Ashore, the fun continues with an exciting range of events from the traditional Regatta Ball, to fantastic firework displays and the amazing Red Arrows and much more.

This year, make sure you make it to Dartmouth Week – and help make it the regatta to remember.
Dartmouth Week 2014....Be part of it …..

Dinghies - August 23 - 26
Passage Race - August 27
Yachts & Keelboats - August 28 - 31
White Sail Event - August 30

Dartmouth Week 2014 will begin with dinghy racing from 23rd to 26th August within the River Dart. The Junior Dinghy Racing wil be based at RDYC and the Senior Dinghy Racing at DSC.
Racing for yachts and keelboats will start with the Passage Race from Brixham to Dartmouth on 27th August.
This is followed on 28th to 31st August by four full days of racing, for all classes of yachts and keelboats, in Start Bay.
And on Saturday 30th August there will be a White Sail Event designed for those sailors who want to enjoy the pleasures of Start Bay, and witness the racing from the water, while participating in a gentle, self administered race.

White Sail Event....Dartmouth Week is a celebration of sailing and we are conscious that there are plenty of sailors who don't necessarily want to race all the time. The White Sail Event is designed for those sailors who want to enjoy the pleasures of Start Bay, and witness the racing from the water, while participating in a gentle, self administered event, to add a little spice to their Saturday under sail. There is no need for spinnakers or large numbers of crew, you simply time yourselves across the start line, complete a course and time yourselves at the finish. In the spirit of the event, handicaps will be allocated according to the best guess of the Chairman and a prize awarded to the winner.
To participate in the White Sail Event, please present yourselves at the Dartmouth Week Office and complete an entry form prior to the briefing. On the day, Saturday 30 August, there will be a briefing for all interested persons at 09:30.

REGATTA SHINDIG - Coronation Park, 6pm - SPONSORED BY THE ROYAL CASTLE HOTEL. One of the newest events is the Regatta Shindig. We struggled to find an appropriate name for what we hoped would be great family entertainment and came up with SHINDIG. The dictionary definition from 1871 is "small dance, party or lively gathering" and we thought this is what we were aiming for! Every party needs music to dance to and we have a great band, with a proven record in the CEILIDH and BARN DANCE fields. Hogwash. - A five piece Dance Band will have everyone on their feet and Promenading, sidestepping and even do si doing! Now everyone has heard of a do si do, but they do not necessarily know how to do it, so for those who want to appear more "on trend" with their dancing skills all you have to do is face your partner, fold your arms, walk past with your right shoulder near theirs, take a step to the right and then walk backwards passing your left shoulder until you are back where you have started! Easy peasy! So whether you call this event a CEILIDH or BARN DANCE or even a SHINDIG, all you need to know is that the children will out dance the adults. We learned that the first time we held it and the youngsters repeated their amazing skills last years too. In fact, sometimes you see very small children showing their Dad the steps.
We added a bucking bronco last year to add to the excitement and managed to escape without having to call in paramedics, although some of the dismount skills employed when riders were parting from their saddle would have won a gymnastics medal at the Olympics - had they managed to land on their feet. Available will be HOT FOOD courtesy of Phil and Gail Bond, a very big bar waiting for you courtesy of our Shindig Sponsors - THE ROYAL CASTLE HOTEL. The SHINDIG is a great night out for families and anyone who likes dancing. £10 for adults. £5 for children aged 5 -16. Under 5 is free. TICKETS ON SALE FROM The Royal Castle Hotel - DARTMOUTH. Always a great favourite at the Regatta. The Royal Navy display team will be thrilling the crowds on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons with their display right over the centre of the town. Pick a spot on the Embankment or the Boat Float and enjoy the display.

THE BLADES AEROBATIC AIR DISPLAY TEAM - 5.30pm
SPONSORED BY SAVILLS - Returning for the 2014 Regatta Air Displays, the Blades aerobatic display team will perform on Wednesday 27th at 5.30 pm. Mark Cutmore, who grew up in Dartmouth before joining the RAF, is a former Red Arrow and Jaguar display pilot. Along with his fellow team mates, Blade 2 - Andy Offer/Chris Carder, Blade 3 – Myles Garland and Blade 4 – Andy Evans, will be displaying their 4 Extra EA-300s low wing, high performance aircraft designed for the most adventurous aerobatic manoeuvres.
Since forming in 2006, The Blades have flown over 600 displays throughout the UK, Europe and the Middle-East. The display lasts 15 minutes – not a figure arrived at by chance – but a duration that allows a fantastic, jaw-dropping sequence of over 30 separate manoeuvres to be flown and yet still leaving the audience wanting more. The Blades have 3 completely interchangeable shows to cope with all sorts of weather conditions. If the visibility and cloud base are good, the Team will fly the ‘full’ show, if the cloud base allows loops but not the extended vertical manoeuvres they will revert to their ‘rolling’ show and finally, if loops are not possible but the cloud base and visibility is above the CAA minimum, they will fly the flat show. They can swap between all 3 routines during the show, so rest assured, those watching The Blades will always get the best possible display on the day.

HAWKER SEA FURY HISTORIC FLIGHT - 5.30pm
The Royal Navy Historic Flight was established at the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton in 1972 in order to preserve Naval heritage, and to be a living memorial to all Fleet Air Arm personnel, especially those who gave their lives in maintaining the freedom of our nation.
The first aircraft to join this unique collection was Swordfish II LS326, which was presented to the Royal Navy in 1960 by the Westland Aircraft Company at Yeovil. This was followed in 1971 by the presentation of a Sea Fury FB.11 to the Royal Navy by Hawker-Siddeley Aviation. In 1972 the Sea Fury was joined at Heron Flight by Fairey Firefly AS.5 WB271, the units looking after the three aircraft merged into one, and so the Historic Flight was born.
Flying the Sea Fury T20 VX-281 will be Lt. Commander Chris Gotke RN. Born in 1970 Chris joined the Royal Navy in 1992. His distinguished Naval Career has seen him fly in the Tucano, and Hawk, before joining 801 NAS in HMS Illustrious flying the Sea Harrier. Leaving HMS Illustrious Chris joined the Fast Jet Test Squadron flying the Jaguar, Alpha Jet, Harvard and all marks of Harrier. In 2004 he joined the R.N.H.F. and after being with them for 10 years he has recently been appointed as their Commanding Officer. Chris now lives in the Yeovilton area with his wife and two daughters. His display to-day in the Sea Fury will thrill all onlookers and it will certainly show you the skills he has learned in all his years of flying in so many varied types of aircraft. A display will worth viewing. Don't miss it. 5.00 pm on Saturday 30th August, 2014.

RAF CHINOOK HELICOPTER DISPLAY - 5.15pm

ROYAL NAVY HELICOPTER DISPLAYS - RN Sea King with RNLI - 5.30pm
Always a great favourite at the Regatta. The Royal Navy display team will be thrilling the crowds on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons with their display right over the centre of the town. Pick a spot on the Embankment or the Boat Float and enjoy the display.

Battle of Britain Memorial Flight - 6.00 pm
The sponsor for this display is Dartmouth Resident Maria Hulme who love the Regatta. Thank you Maria.
A regular favourite amongst the young and old are the majestic aircraft of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF). The Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster will be displaying on Saturday 30th at 6 pm.
In terms of aviation heritage, BBMF is still second to none and it is a source of great pride, not only for all of us on BBMF who work tirelessly to ensure that our wonderful aircraft continue to take to the sky, but also to the Royal Air Force and, indeed, to the Nation. It is my very great privilege to be entrusted with it. My aim will be to take forward the work of my predecessors and continue to enlighten both young and old as to what these wonderful machines represent and the incredible men and women who designed, created, engineered and operated them.
Our wonderful collection of aircraft, of course, reminds us of our glorious past, but it is also very important that we remember the present. We must not forget that the Royal Air Force is still operating across the globe in hostile environments and that its personnel are still putting their lives on the line to protect Britain’s interests, whether that be Tornado crews defending International Forces from the air, the support and engineering staff on the ground that can come under persistent attack, or the RAF Regiment Squadrons that patrol the bases to protect them. The BBMF represents them all and your continued support will ensure that there is a living memorial to all those in the RAF, who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country. Squadron Leader Duncan Mason, Officer Commanding RAF BBMF
